White Gas Plant (Dictamnus alba 'Albiflorus')

This plant is called the Gas Plant, Dittany or Burning Bush, and has some of these names because the plant emits flammable vapor in hot weather. On a still day a match held next to the flowers will sometimes produce a burst of flame. This picture shows the stamens and flowers covered with its sticky seeds and was taken at the Devonian Botanic Gardens.
This is also a good example of scientific names gone wrong. The usual form of the plant has pinkish red flowers, but its species name is "alba" or "white." So, Dictamnus alba or the white Dictamnus is actually red, but there is a white cultivar which is given the epithet "albiflorus," and is therefore the white-flowered white Dittany.
