Leaving Jedediah Smith State Park and the Redwoods we headed northeast up the Redwoods Highway and along the south fork of the Smith River to the California and Oregon border, stopping briefly at a small bog where Cobra Lilies were growing. They, however, were nearly finished and we took few photos of them. This Leopard Lily was photographed there before we traveled on. Near the state border but still in California we headed up a forest service road where we spent most of the day looking for Cobra Lilies and Orchids.

Taken on the Redwoods Highway south of Crescent City, this is the common lily of the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia Lily or Small-flowered Tiger Lily. We spent two days in the area of Crescent City, California visiting the Redwoods and on Sunday driving further down the coast through the Redwoods in Del Norte State Park.

This is our native Tiger Lily, Lilium columbianum. Usually a very tall plant with a lot of flowers there is a dwarf form of this plant that grows on Hurricane Ridge in the Olympics that is less than a foot tall and has only one or two flowers. This flower was photographed there and if you look closely you can see the aphids covering the stem. Last summer was very warm and dry and the aphids were especially abundant, it seemed, wherever we went.

This is the Wood Lily, Lilium philadelphicum, photographed along the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park. Though this grows taller in some areas, where we found it the plants did not exceed a foot and half (45cm). It is quite common in western Alberta and has a wide range in Canada and the USA.

I posted a picture of this wildflower earlier, but thought I'd post one more with a Crab Spider lurking on the back of the flower. The photo was taken in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon and the flower is Lilium pardalinum ssp. vollmeri, also known as the Leopard Lily. The species of the Spider I do not know. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/orchid-hunting-in-siskiyous.html

In Explore August 27, 2011, #304. This is the form of the Tiger Lily found here in the Pacific Northwest. This plant was photographed on a orchid hunting excursion to Vancouver Island. We were looking for the rather insignificant but rare native orchid shown below, Platanthera chorisiana, Chamisso's Orchid. We were looking for it in a high altitude bog under the guidance of Dr. Hans Roemer, a botanist and ecologist with the BC government. We found the orchid in several locations but also found many other wildflowers in bloom including these lovely lilies. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/bog-trottin...
