This is a shrub, Evergreen Sumac, photographed in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park in west Texas.

These are the fruits of the Staghorn Sumac, photographed in Bass River Recreation Area in Michigan. The fruits, though rather hairy, release a burst of flavor when bitten and can be used to make a delicious tea full of Vitamin C.

Photographed in the Bass River Recreation Area, this is one of four Sumac species that grow in Michigan. The fruits, shown in the inset photo, can be eaten and make a delicious drink high in Vitamin C.

This photo was taken along the Maple Pass loop in the North Cascades when we hiked there last October. There had been snow but apparently very little frost since the Sumac berries appeared untouched.
