Photographed in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park along the Hellhole Canyon trail, the cacti are Southwestern Barrel Cactus and the Ocotillo in front of them is a very young plant (they grow to be about fifteen feet tall). The smaller sunlit plant at the base of the cacti is a young Brittlebush.

These were just beginning to bloom along the Fortynine Palms trail when we visited Joshua Tree National Park. They were everywhere along the trail but mostly in bud. We were thrilled to see some of the cacti in bloom but would have liked to have seen them a week later.

This is a small barrel cactus. They grow to several feet tall. We found buds and few blooms on them but were a little early for their bloom season.

The buds of this California Barrel Cactus are just visible in the photo. We found a few flowers just beginning to open in Joshua Tree National Park along the Fortynine Palms trail.

These Barrel Cacti grow much larger than this, in some areas growing to a height of several feet. We photographed them on the second day of our stay in Death Valley National Park along the Racetrack Valley Road where we had stopped to explore a cliffside covered with these and other cacti. None were in flower at this location but we would see them in flower elsewhere.
