Dorsal means "back" or "of the back." In orchids the dorsal sepal is the uppermost "petal" of the flower, in this picture - the green part of the flower that is curved forward. This particular orchid is named after the Chinese Hainan Islands. It is native to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia and has beautifully mottled leaves. This flower was photographed at the Mount Baker Orchid Society Show in Mount Vernon, Washington.
