Last Spring we traveled with our handiucapped son to Michigan so he could see his 92 year old grandfather. We spent a night in Rapid City, South Dakota, and had a little extra time to drive through Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We stopped in the canyon at Bridal Veil Falls to watch several ice climbers who were climbing the falls.

One of many falls around the world with this name, these falls are in the North Cascades along the trail to Lake Serene. The photo was taken on a hike to Lake Serene with friends with whom we also hiked the trail to the falls.

There are two Bridal Veil Falls in our area and must be hundreds of others, but this falls is in Alaska along the Richardson Highway between Glennallen and Valdez - in Keystone Canyon, a part of Thompson Pass. The day was the worst day of our trip, with rain and very low clouds, but we managed a hike to Worthington Glacier and stopped for pictures at various points in Thompson Pass before heading back to Glennallen.

On the Fourth of July my brother, Tim, was in our area on business and we went hiking at Lake Serene, an eight and a half mile hike to a beautiful alpine lake with a short side trail to these falls which have their source at the lake's outlet. We started very early in the morning and had the trail to ourselves, but found a lot of folk on the trail as we came down since it was a holiday. We enjoyed the hike but were thankful we missed the rush.
My wife and I are traveling once again, this time through the Canadian Rockies to see our children and grandchildren in Edmonton. For that reason commenting will have to be done as time permits, but we do appreciate all the visits and comments and will return them as soon as possible.

Taken on a foggy morning at the spot where the trail to Bridal Veil Falls ends. Standing here, the falls would be behind and the view if it was clear would look out over the Snohomish Valley. The picture of the falls below was taken on the same day.

Only a few more photos from Lake Serene. This is an older photo taken from the other side of the lake. The end of the trail is to the right of the picture, the outlet of the lake through the narrow gap in the trees and Lunch Rock near the center of the picture. There is a short side trail to the rock and it is not only a popular place for lunch and little sunshine but also for bathing. The outlet of the lake is the origin of Bridal Veil Falls.

This is an older shot from an earlier hike to Lake Serene and was taken on the side trail to Bridal Veil Falls. I was trying to catch the light through the trees and the shades of green.

Another shot of the falls, a short side trip from the main trail to Lake Serene. This is taken from below since we did not hike the side trail for lack of time and eagerness to get home. We had driven cross-country earlier in the week and were on our way from eastern Washington when we met the other members of the native orchid society for this hike

Bridal Veil Falls is on a short side trail from the trail to Lake Serene. This photo was taken from below the falls, the only view we had of the falls on this hike, since we did not take the side trail. The photo below was taken at the falls when we had time and opportunity to get up there. Both photos were taken at a time of the year when there was little water coming over the falls from Lake Serene.

This was taken last Friday when we hiked up to Lake Serene in the mist. It was very difficult to get any time exposures under those conditions - this was the best I could do.

Can't quite make up my mind about this. Played around with it in PSE, something I don't usually do, and still am not sure about it. Suggestions appreciated.
In any case, this was taken on our hike up to Lake Serene on a misty gray day. These are the falls just below the lake, though it was still a steep two mile climb to the lake.

Last week Friday we hiked to Lake Serene at the foot of Mount Index in the area of Skykomish, Washington. These falls are on a popular side trail. There was a heavy mist and the falls were barely visible, but I went back later to get some better pictures.
