On a recent trip to western Washington to visit with family there, we hiked partway up to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. There was not enough snow for snowshoes - this was October - but enough to enjoy the winter weather there. The day was very bright and so many of the photos I took were under-exposed. This photo is of Lower Bagley Lake between the ski resort and Austin Pass. Table Mountain is visible in the background.

This is Lower Bagley Lake in late October. Bagley Lakes are near Mount Baker in the North Cascades and are a popular hiking and snowshoeing area year around. The photo was taken near the overflow parking lot for the Heather Meadows Ski Area.

After traveling for eleven days we ended up in Lynden, Washington, where we lived before retirement. We went there for a wedding and to see our youngest son and daughter-in-law who live there. Another son who was there for the wedding and I went hiking Friday from Austin Pass up to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. We discovered that about half the trail was still snow-covered but went up anyway and had a time. The day was partly cloudy and we did not see Baker or Shuksan, but could see Table Mountain at times. Interestingly, the son with whom I hiked is named Herman and the place matches his name.

I went hiking last Friday with one of our sons. We hiked from Austin Pass, between Bagley Lakes and up Herman Saddle in the area of Mount Baker. The area and the trail still had a lot of snow and Bagley Lakes were largely frozen. This was Upper Bagley Lake from the trail.

This is the stream that connects Upper and Lower Bagley Lakes near Mount Baker. We crossed the stream and this point and picked up the trail on the left of the photo, the Chain Lakes trail, taking it up to Herman Saddle.

Herman Saddle lies to the west of Artist's Point between Mount Herman (to the right in the photo) and Table Mountain (to the left). Below it in the valley is Upper Bagley Lake. The area is popular for hiking in the summer and one of the best trails follows the far shore of Upper Bagley Lake along the lower slopes of Mount Herman, through Herman Saddle and down to Chain Lakes before heading round the other side of Table Mountain.

I've posted three pictures, something I have not done in a long time. PLEASE do not feel that you have to comment on them all or even on any of them. I only hope you enjoy the beautiful autumn colors and scenery. I posted this picture to show the incredible beauty of the area we live in. This is high in the North Cascades, but only a little over an hour's drive and another hour's hike from where we live. I feel sometimes that the mountains, both scenery and small nature, are so beautiful that my heart is going to stop beating just by seeing it all, and to see it in all the changes that seasons bring is a gift beyond description. Several weeks ago, only days before this area was closed because of snow, my wife and I hiked the trail that is just visible on the left to Chain Lakes. We had never hiked this trail but were overwhelmed by the views of Mount Shuksan. The autumn color, too, was the best we had ever seen and we each came home with over a thousand pictures. Not all of them were saved, but we did manage to capture a few priceless memories of autumn in the mountains. Some of the features visible in this shot are identified in the notes, and a more detailed description of our hike with further pictures can be found at: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/11/autumn-colo...
