Masdevallia coccinea is an orchid species from high altitudes in Colombia. It is very variable in color (coccinea means scarlet red) and is usually quite large. This particular example stays quite small and the flowers are somewhat smaller also, but has the same stunning color of the larger versions. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2010/07/masdevallia-cocci...

I've posted three more orchid pictures in which I've been trying to do some creative photography. I shot this flower from the side with very bright lighting on the front of the flower and some reflected light on the back to try to bring out the difference in color. I also left it uncropped since it seemed more dramatic with all the black.
