On a recent trip to western Washington to visit with family there, we hiked partway up to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. There was not enough snow for snowshoes - this was October - but enough to enjoy the winter weather there. The day was very bright and so many of the photos I took were under-exposed. This photo is of Lower Bagley Lake between the ski resort and Austin Pass. Table Mountain is visible in the background.

Chain Lakes Trail

We were not actually following the trail when this photo was taken, but climbing up the waterfall, and unnamed cascade near the Chain Lakes trail in the Mount Baker Wilderness. I was hiking there with one of my sons who is always off the trail climbing something. As is obvious from the photo, there is still snow at these elevations and for a good part of the hike we were hiking across snow.

After traveling for eleven days we ended up in Lynden, Washington, where we lived before retirement. We went there for a wedding and to see our youngest son and daughter-in-law who live there. Another son who was there for the wedding and I went hiking Friday from Austin Pass up to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. We discovered that about half the trail was still snow-covered but went up anyway and had a time. The day was partly cloudy and we did not see Baker or Shuksan, but could see Table Mountain at times. Interestingly, the son with whom I hiked is named Herman and the place matches his name.

I went hiking last Friday with one of our sons. We hiked from Austin Pass, between Bagley Lakes and up Herman Saddle in the area of Mount Baker. The area and the trail still had a lot of snow and Bagley Lakes were largely frozen. This was Upper Bagley Lake from the trail.

This is the stream that connects Upper and Lower Bagley Lakes near Mount Baker. We crossed the stream and this point and picked up the trail on the left of the photo, the Chain Lakes trail, taking it up to Herman Saddle.

On our recent snowshoeing trek to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker we found these wheels of snow that had come down from the surrounding slopes and then fallen over.

When we snowshoed recently to Herman Saddle in the North Cascades near Mount Baker we followed Bagley Creek for part of the way and there were still areas that had not frozen over, this near the bridge that connects Austin Pass with the trail to Herman Saddle.

The area where we went snowshoeing is a popular off-piste skiing area as well and these ski trails were on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Winter Trees

This was taken near Austin Pass on the way back down from Artist's Point. The lines of the trees and of the blown snow sticking to them really caught my eye.

Austin Pass is along the road to Artist's Point, now closed for the winter. This small pond lies near the parking area there. It was at Austin Pass that I parked the car before hiking the Galena-Chain Lakes trail. I thought the autumn color and the hint of reflections in the pond were wonderful and took these photos just before getting back in the car at the end of the hike.

This was taken near the end of my hike at Chain Lakes and looks back toward Table Mountain from Austin Pass where I left my vehicle. I had hiked through the notch at the right center of the photo and then around the back of Table Mountain to the ridge on the left and then down to this point, a small pond near the parking area at Austin Pass.

Looking back down the trail while hiking with Tim. The lake is Upper Bagley Lake and the trail goes to Chain Lakes. At this point bad weather was moving in and what sunshine there was would disappear and the rain would start. The road to Artist's Point can be seen across the valley.

Last autumn Tim and I had the opportunity to go hiking near Austin Pass in the area of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan. We aborted the hike on account of the weather but did get to see some of the autumn color in the area. Now you get to see it, too.
