While photographing Bog Orchids (Tall Northern Green Bog Orchid in this case) in Kootenay National Park in British Columbia, I stopped to photograph this moth, never realizing until I arrived home that the moth was in the clutches of a Crab Spider which must have been hiding out on the orchid.

Taking photos of Bog Orchids in Kootenay National Park in British Columbia, we found this Crab Spider hiding out among the flowers. One of the insets shows another Crab Spider with a captured moth and the second inset shows a Spittle Bug, though only the spittle and not the bug is visible. The orchid is Platanthera huronensis, the Tall Northern Bog Orchid, very common in the Canadian Rockies.

These things are huge! We've seen them several times in our travels and have had them identified as Golden Orb Spiders, in this case the female. This one was photographed in the area of Cape Tribulation and was around eight inches (20 cm) in size.

Photographed along the Lake serene trail, the photo is a little grainy because the light was so poor and I had to use a high ISO to get the shot.

Crab Spider on Small-flowered Trillium

Several weeks ago we were on an excursion with the Washington Native Orchid Society to see the Fairy Slippers and a very rare Trillium, shown in this photo, that grows in only a few locations in our state, as well as other native wildflowers. The spider is Misumena vatia. Because the area, which also includes a rare hanging fen, is very sensitive and protected, we not only had to get permission to visit, but had to sign a promise that we would not disclose any location information, so all I can say is that this was in Thurston County. There are many more photos of the area and its flora and fauna at this link: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/thurston-co...

Photographed on the Dog Mountain trail in the Columbia River gorge earlier this year. I have not identified the spider, so if anyone knows I'd appreciate the information. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/07/dog-mountai...
