Dead Horse Point is in a state park near Canyonlands National Park. The point is connected by a very narrow neck to the plateau nearby and was once used as a corral for wild horse. The cowboys would drive the horses there, take the best and leave the rest to die, hence the name of the point. We've been there several times, with this photo from a 2022 visit to the park and point.

We visited Dead Horse Point State Park briefly this past summer when in Utah. This was the view east from the overlook in the park. The La Sal Mountains are visible in the background and the ponds in the middle of the photo are drying ponds for a company that mines potash in the area.

I have finally gotten a chance to post some photos. We drove cross-country Monday and Tuesday, a total of about 2300 miles, and spent yesterday with my 93 year old father. We'll see him again today along with other family members, but I am using this morning to catch up on some things. This was taken on a 2022 trip to Utah and Texas and to Canyonlands and Big Bend National Parks, though this photo is from Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. The state park overlooks the Colorado River and the canyon through which it runs. We were there for only a short time before going on.

We made a brief visit to Dead Horse Point State Park when leaving the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands and before heading for the Needles District where we would spend another few days.

Leaving the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park we made a brief visit to Dead Horse Point State Park before on on to the Needles District of Canyonlands were we spent several days hiking and exploring. The state park is a small park with a campground, some trails and this amazing view of the Colorado River.

Dead Horse point State Park is just outside the north entrance to Canyonlands National Park and overlooks the Colorado River. We were there at sunrise last spring on the way to Texas.

This was taken with my phone at sunrise in Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. We had been in the Island in the Sky area of Canyonlands National Park the previous day and got up early to catch the sunrise here, just a few miles outside of that part of Canyonlands. We went on from here, after having our breakfast, to the Needles district of Canyonlands.
