Doon, Iowa

This was the sleepy little farm town in northwest Iowa where I grew up as a boy. We were back there recently and were able to get some photos of my old haunts. When we lived there in the 1960's Doon had a population of about 300 people. It now has just over 600 but hasn't changed much. This is Main Street which had more businesses when I was a boy but even then not many. The other photos are of the house we lived in and of the school I attended. The car is a 1958 or 1959 Ford Fairlane from about the same era.

This is the school I attended as a boy, three grades to a classroom. The school is no longer in operation but the building and grounds are maintained by the church next door which owns the property.

This is the house I lived in as a boy. It is now a rental, very dilapidated and run down, but still a place that holds many memories for for me. The house is on Main Street in Doon, Iowa, a small, sleepy farming community in northwest Iowa.

Rhyolite, Nevada, is a ghost town on the California and Nevada border. It flourished during a gold rush in the late 1800's but declined and became a ghost town in the 1920's. This was the Overbury Bank Building in Rhyolite's heyday with the school behind it.

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse

Traveling up the Lake Huron shore we visited quite a number of lighthouses, this the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse which marks a reef, still a huge hazard to navigation. This lighthouse, like many on the Great Lakes, is still operational and has a a 3 1/2 order Fresnel lens. It is in a state park of the same name. Anyone who loves lighthouses should visit Michigan for this is one of 124 lighthouses in the state, both peninsulas of which are surrounded by water and dotted with lighthouses. The insets show an old fishing boat which is on the same property and the old Bailey School which was moved to the park from nearby Mikado Township.

Moved to Sturgeon Point State Park from nearby Mikado Township, this one-room schoolhouse is typical of such schools. The state park is on Lake Huron and has a beautiful lighthouse that marks a hazardous reef.

Learning Colors #1

These pictures were taken without previous planning in a schoolroom used by seven students in grades kindergarten through second. The vividness, variety and amount of color were overwhelming and showed how difficult it would be to learn in black and white.
