Snakefruit

This was one of the many tropical fruits we sampled in Malaysia when there for a conference in 2011. This is Snakefruit or Salak, the reason for its name very obvious, a fruit unavailable in the states but one which we would willing purchase if it was.

Durian

In 2011 we were in Singapore and Malayasia for a conference. We tried many different tropical fruits, Jambu, Rambutan, Lychee, Snakefruit and like them all except this one, Durian. Its smell has been described as "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock" and it is banned on the rapid transit system in Singapore because of its smell. The edible part has the texture of custard and is very acidic. The flavor is not bad but the combination of smell and texture was more than I could handle. My wife ate more than I did but even she did not like it. We tried it at a Durian "feast" the last night of the conference when crates of Durian were brought in and opened.

Monkey

There was family of monkeys outside our window one morning, not something we experience in the States. I don't know what kind of monkeys they are and the picture is not the best, but thought I'd post it anyway. The monkeys did get into one of the rooms where the windows had not been closed and wreaked havoc with the owner's possessions.

Decided to post some of my pictures taken early last summer in Malaysia and Singapore. We were there briefly and did not have a lot of time for pictures on account of the busyness. This picture was taken at a pond on the grounds of the conference center near Rompin in Pahang.

One more picture of the lotus I previously posted, this time a close-up (with a telephoto lens). Taken on the grounds of the Conference Center we stayed in while in Pahang, Malaysia.

Taken early one morning walking the beach while in Pahang, Malaysia, near Rompin, for a conference. I began walking while it was still dark and walked quite a few miles in a very isolated area, watching and taking pictures as the sky lightened and the sun rose.
