This flower has just opened and is much darker in color than the flowers that have been open for some time. The color fades a bit after the flower is mature. Interestingly, the temperature makes a difference in flower color as well. The blooms that open in warmer temperatures are much lighter in color than those that open in cooler temps.

Several years ago I purchased a number of mini-cattleya seedlings and they are now beginning to bloom. This opened last week and is an unregistered cross of Sophrocattleya Mini Collins and Sophrocattleya Beaufort. I'm pleased with its form and color, but probably will not keep it, since I do not grow a lot of minicatts and this one is just a bit larger than the few I do grow. For those who are not into orchids, the orchid world is as much into naming and registering plants as is the world of dogs or horses and since orchid hybrids began to made it has been the Royal Horticultural Society in the United Kingdom with which all hybrids are officially registered (for a fee, of course). This cross was made by Sunset Valley Orchids and has not been registered.
