This seabird colony of Pelagic Cormorants and Common Murres (Guillemots) was photographed at Yaquina Head on the Oregon coast near Newport.

The smallest of our native cormorants, this example was photographed from the Coupeville ferry dock while waiting for the ferry to leave for Port Townsend on the Olympic Penninsula.

This was taken in Port Townsend from the ferry as it was preparing to sail. The bird is a Pelagic Cormorant, I think, a very common bird around the ports.

We were on a camping trip May 23-25 with a group of 6-8th graders and while with them went as foot passengers on the ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. While waiting for the ferry to leave I tried to get pictures of the cormorants who were nesting on the docking pilings and flying back and forth to the water. This was the best of the in-flight shots that I was able to get.
