This little bird was photographed in the Cape Tribulation area of the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland. He is perched on a plant of Crepe Ginger and was also feeding from the flowers. We were in the Cape Tribulation area all day yesterday and though the weather was not great, had a wonderful time. As with every day here we saw a lot of plants and creatures we could not identify and I had to find out what bird this was before I could post the photo.

Blewett Pass is on the east slopes of the Cascades and a favorite place or ours for wildflowers and native orchids, including the Lady's Slippers I posted previously. In the photo, the flowers in the foreground are Showy Penstemon, Penstemon speciosus, with Bitterbush, Purshia tridentata, the plant with the pale yellow flowers behind them. The view is south over the foothills of the Cascades.

Photographed in Derby Canyon near Peshastin, Washington, I believe this is the Showy or Royal Penstemon, Penstemon speciosus, though I have trouble with some of them in telling them apart. Derby Canyon is one of many rather dry sandstone canyons in the area that have an amazing flora and are well worth exploring. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.ca/2012/07/derby-canyon...
