Our oldest daughter is visiting from Northern Ireland and yesterday we went hiking at Fishtrap Lake in the channeled scablands of eastern Washington. We hiked the prairies on the west side of the lake and just as I had hoped found the Bitterroot blooming. Bitterroot is Lewisia rediviva, a flower that blooms before the leaves and lies right on the ground. They are, in my opinion, one of our most beautiful wildflowers.

Lewisiopsis tweedyi, formerly Lewisia tweedyi, is one of Washington's most beautiful and rarest wildflowers. It grows in rocky areas in a small area around Leavenworth on the east side of the Cascades. It has flowers in soft pinks and yellows that are up to three inches across and each plant is covered with flowers during its blooming season. I had to go a long way up Derby Canyon this past spring to find it and nearly fell down the steep rocky slope on which they were growing when trying to take photos.
On another note, my presence on Ipernity will be sporadic over the next few weeks since we will be traveling cross-country to Michigan to visit family, a journey of some 2000 miles. We'll be stopping at some of the national parks along the way and visiting friends as well and will not actually be in Michigan until the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I'll get on as opportunity presents itself, but opportunity will be especially rare in the national parks and we'll be busy with other things in any case.

Derby Canyon is near Peshastin, Washington, on the east side of the Cascades, and is a favorite place for spring wildflowers. We were in the area this past week though this picture was taken a year ago. The photo was taken along one of the roads in the canyon, a logging road, and looks back down the canyon. We had stopped here for photos of Lewisia tweedyi (see inset), which grows only in a limited area on the east side of the Cascades and which is found in abundance in this canyon.

Bitterroot, Lewisia rediviva, is one of our most spectacular wildflowers. Blooming in rocky and dry areas its leafless flower stems with their huge blossoms in shades of pink and white seem to appear like magic from the ground. The name "rediviva" meaning "restored to life" refers to this. These were photographed along the Ray Westburg trail on Manastash Ridge in eastern Washington.

This is Lewisia tweedyi, one of our wildflower treasures. It grows only in the Wenatchee Mountains of eastern Washington and southern British Columbia. The flowers are up to four inches in diameter (9cm) and come in these delicate shades of white, yellow, pink and orange.

We hike the Chiwaukum Creek trail every year for two reasons, to see the Fairy Slippers and to see the Mountain Roses, Lewisia tweedyi, which bloom at about the same time there. These huge, softly colored flowers are one of Washington State's most beautiful treasures.

Really not a rose at all, this is one of our loveliest wildflowers, Lewisia tweedyi, indigenous to the Wentachee area on the east slopes of the Cascades, it blooms in the spring and has the largest flowers of any of the Lewisias that are native to our area. This was photographed in Derby Canyon, east of Peshastin, Washington.
