This photo was taken from the scree slope visible in the next photo. and looks back in the direction from which we had come. At this point we were nearing Berg Lake and the Robson River floodplain below the lake. I believe the peak in the photo is Whitehorn, but stand to be corrected.

Earlier in the morning this photo was taken we had left our campsite in Whitehorn Basin along the Robson River (visible in the lower part of the photo), had hiked a short distance along the river, crossed a bridge and started to climb Emperor Hill. That hill ascends nearly 400 meters over 5 kilometers giving occasional views such as this back down the valley.

This was taken as we hiked up Emperor Hill in Mount Robson Provincial Park (B.C.) along the Berg Lake trail. From Whitehorn Basin, where we started on this second day of our hike, to Emperor Falls we hiked up the Valley of a Thousand Falls, this one of the more spectacular waterfalls in the valley. We had crossed the Robson River near Whitehorn campground and as we switchbacked up Emperor Hill had occasional views down into the valley.

Continuing the story of our hike to Berg Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia, this was the start of day two. We packed our gear and had a breakfast of instant oatmeal and coffee and headed out along the Robson River to the bridge below White Falls where this photo was taken. Crossing the bridge we started up Emperor Hill, the toughest part of the hike. Climbing Emperor Hill we gained the better part of 400 meters of elevation over 5 kilometers up through the Valley of a Thousand Falls. The weather had turned sunny but the sun had not yet reached this area when the photo was taken. The many falls such as this one and the views (several of which are shown in the insets) make the climb up Emperor Hill more than worthwhile.

We had seen these in Banff and now saw them again in Mount Robson Provincial Park. Backpacking up the Berg Lake trail we stopped and photographed these by Kinney Lake and again at our campground in Whitehorn. At Kinney Lake they were past their peak but at the higher elevation of Whitehorn they were perfect. They are the Large Northern Yellow Lady's Slipper, Cypripedium parviflorum var. parviflorum, very rare in Washington but common further north.

This particular plant had two flowers, somewhat unusual for the species.

This is the Whitehorn Basin and the Robson River where we camped overnight on our backpacking trip to Berg Lake. Whitehorn Mountain can be seen in the background. At this point we had hiked 11 kilometers over a fairly easy trail, but had spent a lot of time taking photos and admiring the scenery. The next four kilometers would be quite difficult, but we did that the next morning when we were fresh.

In August we visited our children and grandchildren in Edmonton and on the way home spent a day hiking in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. We hiked the Berg Lake trail as far as Whitehorn Basin where we had lunch and a rest before hiking out again. This view looks north from the campsites at Whitehorn and up the Valley of a Thousand Falls with Mount Phillips in the background.
