Gunnison's Mariposa, one of the beautiful Sego Lilies, is a western wildflower, this one photographed in the Castle Creek area of the Colorado Rockies.
The photo may be the last I post for a while. We will be leaving later today for Oregon and California and will be tomorrow in the area of Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak.
We plan to be away for almost three weeks and will be going on from southern California to Arizona visiting various parks, hiking and backpacking as we wish.

I'm posting a few more photos from Dry Falls State Park, some of them taken in 2018 on a field trip with the Washington Native Orchid Society. They'll be the last I'll be posting from there, but have so many photos taken recently that I do not even know what I'll be posting next .
This is the Prairie Mariposa Lily, a beautiful wildflower that also grows in the fields near our home. Mariposas are some of our favorite wildflowers and this is one of the more beautiful of them. They usually grow in very dry areas and that certainly describes Dry Falls. It is in the high desert of eastern Washington.

This is another wildflower we went to see at Dry Falls State Park in Washington on our recent trip. Though it also grows near our home, it is much more common in the park. It is quite a large flower but we had a hard time photographing it since it was quite windy.

It is rather ironic that several weeks ago I had driven three or four hours and done some hiking to see these Sagebrush Mariposa Lilies and then my wife and I found them growing in the fields near our home. There are a number of species of Mariposa Lilies in Washington (another similar species is shown in the insets along with another photo of this species) and they are always a delight.

Calochortus lyallii is a rather common spring wildflower in drier areas of eastern Washington, but always a delight to find. It is less than a foot (30cm) tall and has several of these intricate and beautiful flowers. This example was photographed on a wet morning in Derby Canyon near Peshastin, Washington.
I apologize for the delay in returning comments. We are visiting our handicapped son in eastern Washington and entertaining a grandson from Indiana and spent yesterday orchid hunting and fossil hunting in northern Washington.

Photographed in Derby Canyon on the east side of the Cascades, this lovely wildflower is found only in a few counties. Its botanical name is Calochortus lyallii, and while these flowers are almost white, it can have a purplish cast as well. It grows and blooms in the spring for a relatively shot period of time.
