Dendrobium Illusion

I don't grow a lot of hybrid orchids, preferring species, since they are as they come from the wild. This, however, is one of the hybrids I do grow, a hybrid of two New Guinea species, Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and lawesii, the first a tiny plant with large long-lasting flowers and the second a cane-type species with similarly shaped flowers (see inset photos, the first of which is Dend. lawesii and the second Dend. cuthbertsonii). Both parents produce flowers in a rainbow of colors so the results of this cross can be almost any color at all. This example has "canes" 12 cm tall and flowers that look very much like the Dendrobium cuthbertsonii parent.

This is a hybrid between the large-flowered but micro-miniature Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and the cane-type Dendrobium lawesii. The plants of this hybrid are about three inches tall, much larger than cuthbertsonii, but much small than lawesii and the flowers are about the same size as cuthbertsonii. The individual flowers last as long as six months. A picture of the plant in flower can be seen at my blog: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/05/in-bloom-no...

This plant is a hybrid of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and Dendrobium lawesii, the former a tiny miniature and the latter a large cane-type Dendrobium. These plants are only a few inches tall and produce a profusion of long-lasting flowers that resemble the smaller parent. More pictures can be seen on the following two blog posts: orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2010/11/dendrobium-illusi... orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2010/07/dendrobium-illusi...

Dendrobium Illusion is a hybrid of the tiny Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and the much larger Dendrobium lawesii, both from Papua New Guinea. I have three plants and this has flowers that are more open, more orange and larger than the other plants, but it does not bloom as profusely as they do.
