This miniature, easy-to-grow species is from Brazil. Like the other species in the genus it produces large flowers for the size of the plant and requires cooler temperatures, high humidity and good air movement. Promenaea xanthina is the best-known species in the genus and the most readily available. It has 5 cm flowers on an 8 cm plant and blooms prolifically late spring to early summer when happy.

I posted a photo of different species of Promenaea with yellow flowers a few days ago. Like that species this is from Brazil. It's a small plant with relatively large flowers that likes cooler temperatures. Its species name comes from its resemblance to the flowers of the succulent, Stapelia.

Promenaea stapelioides is a miniature orchid in a small genus of plants that all come from Brazil. This species gets it name from its resemblance to the flowers of the Stapelia plant, a South African succulent. The plant is three inches tall and the flowers an inch and a quarter. It blooms for me in the spring.

This lovely species is from Brazil. The plant is four inches with soft leaves and a small pseudobulb at the base of the leaves. The flowers are two inches and come in the spring. The plant is grown in a net pot and in live sphagnum moss. It prefers cooler temperatures and high humidity. More pictures here: orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/07/promenaea-xanthin...

This rather strange looking orchid is named for its fancied resemblance to the succulent genus, Stapelia. It is native to Brazil and has flowers that are large for the size of the plant, a very popular orchid among growers of miniatures.
