Native to India, this epiphytic or lithophytic orchid grows on or near limestone cliffs in cool mountain forests. The flowers are fragrant. It was photographed at the Mount Baker Orchid Society show in Mount Vernon, Washington. We visited the show on February 27 and spent nearly four hours photographing the orchids.

Barbosella cucullata is an orchid species from Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. It is also another Pleurothallid, related to Masdevallia. Many of the species in this genus are very small, but this one is a bit larger with thick, channeled leaves about 5 cm tall and long, erect flower spikes (15 cm), and single flowers 4 cm in size. In nature it is a lithophyte, growing on moss-covered rocks, and in cultivation seems to like a thick pad of moss as well. It blooms for me in late winter or early spring. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/04/barbosella-cucull...
