This orchid species is related to Masdevallia but (obviously) has a very different "look." The plant has thick channeled leaves a few inches tall, with six-inch long flower spikes and these rather oddly colored and shaped flowers. It has a wide range, from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia. It is one of the larger species in the genus, which includes some very tiny plants and flowers.

I posted another picture of this flower earlier and someone commented on the unusual colors. Here's a close-up of the flower that shows the colors even more clearly. It is from Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia.

Barbosella cucullata is an orchid species from Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. It is also another Pleurothallid, related to Masdevallia. Many of the species in this genus are very small, but this one is a bit larger with thick, channeled leaves about 5 cm tall and long, erect flower spikes (15 cm), and single flowers 4 cm in size. In nature it is a lithophyte, growing on moss-covered rocks, and in cultivation seems to like a thick pad of moss as well. It blooms for me in late winter or early spring.
