This is the same flower I posted a few days ago, but from a different angle. Masdevallia sotoana is a tiny orchid species from Ecuador and I've posted this as number 12 in my 100x: 2014 project. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2014/02/masdevallia-sotoana-edward-cbraos.html

Masdevallia sotoana is a tiny orchid species from Ecuador. The plant is only 4cm tall and the tubular part of the flowers only 1cm long. The flower is lined with glandular hairs but I do not know what the function of the hairs is. There are more photos of these unusual flowers at the blog post below. This is number 9 in my 100x: 2014 project.

Masdevallia sotoana is a recently described species from Ecuador that looks like a poor cousin of Masdevallia strobelii, The coloration of the two species is similar and this species also has the glandular hairs covering the inside of the sepals that are a feature of all the species in section Saltatrices. As noted with other species from this group, these have both the "hairs" and a kind a "belly" at the base of the flower, though this is not very distinct in Masdevallia sotoana. The plant is a miniature, 7 cm tall, and the flowers, which are held just above the foliage, are about 2 cm long. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/01/masdevallia-sotoa...

This tiny orchid species is from Ecuador, like so many other I grow and was awarded recently by the American Orchid Society. The flowers a a bit over a half an inch long and the plant is an inch and a half tall. It is similar to other Masdevallia species, especially Masdevallia strobelii but is much smaller. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/01/masdevallia-sotoa...

This is another photo of the tiny Masdevallia I posted a few days ago. It is from Ecuador and belongs to a group of Masdevallias that have flowers lined with the crystalline glandular hairs that can be clearly seen in this photo. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2013/01/masdevallia-sotoa...
