Waterfall

We saw this unnamed falls when hiking to Crater Lake (not the Crater Lake in Oregon). We found the falls, however, only because we had lost the trail (we later found it again), and we lost the trail because there was hardly any trail. Several years ago I tried to find Crater Lake on a foggy and very wet day and got lost. At that point the trail was marked with soggy bits of toilet paper many of which had disintegrated in the rain. This time the trail, such as it was, was marked with pieces of pink and orange ribbon, but we could not always find them. We did get to the lake eventually, however, with the help of my GPS, and didn't even mind getting lost, since otherwise we would have missed these falls and the beautiful rocky glen into which they fell. The creek, if I am not mistaken, is Money Creek, and is the outlet for Crater Lake.

Damon and Pythias Mine

My apologies for being so late with comments today, but we were underground. My wife and I and three friends explored the Damon and Pythias Mine in the Skykomish area of the North Cascades. We had been told about this mine by an Ipernity friend who knew the area and had been in the mine and we went there first and then went on and bushwacked our way to Crater Lake, a small alpine lake in the same area. We had beautiful weather and an amazing day. The Damon and Pythias Mine was a gold mine that was opened in the late nineteenth century and operated sporadically until the late nineteenth century. Silver, lead and arsenic were taken from the mine which is a series of horizontal shafts with much of the old track for the ore cars and other equipment still in the mine. I'm not sure what the tank was used for but an old ore chute and shaft are just to the right and two other shafts to the left and straight ahead.

Lake Elizabeth Outlet

Another of my wife's pictures from Lake Elizabeth, showing the outlet of the lake and the source of Money Creek. The day was dull and overcast, but she managed beautifully, I think, to capture the lushness of the foliage and quiet of this little alpine lake. The orchids are mostly on the sedge mat on the far side of the lake. There is another lake further up, Crater Lake (not the well-known lake in Oregon)., I tried to find it last fall, but the track was barely evident, it was very foggy and chilly, and soaked to the skin, cold and afraid of getting lost, I finally gave it up. We intend to find it this summer, though. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/another-vis...

Money Creek

Lake Elizabeth is the headwaters of Money Creek which empties into the Skykomish River. The Forest Service road that goes to Lake Elizabeth follows the creek for much of its distance. This photo was taken along that road by my wife. The creek was named by miners who prospected for gold, silver and copper in the area, but who were, as someone said, "more optimistic than successful." ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/lake-elizab...
