In Explore, March 18, 2012, #159. Scaphosepalums are a group of small orchids belonging to the Pleurothallidinae and are related to Masdevallia. Many of them have the long "horns" like this flower and are "upside down" by the standard of most orchids, with the column at the bottom of the flower rather than the top. This flower is on a plant several inches tall that has successively blooming flower spikes 4-6 inches long. The flowers themselves are nearly two inches from tip to tip. It comes from Ecuador.

This odd orchid is only a few inches tall, has flower spikes over a foot long and these rather small flowers with long "horns," something that is typical of the flowers in this genus. They are also upside down as orchids go, though most orchids turn up-side-down which is right-side-up before they bloom (everyone followed that, I hope). This doesn't, doesn't turn over, that is. The flower spikes are also covered with "warts" and continue to produce individual flowers over a long period of time. That makes this odd, to say the least, but the buds are even odder. I'll let you all wait with drooling anticipation for a picture of those, however.. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/06/scaphosepalum-mer...

This is an unopened flower of the species shown below. The plant is small, about three inches and the flowers, nearly two inches from tip to tip, bloom successively on long, eight inch spikes. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/search/label/scaphosepalu...
