This is the Slender Bog Orchis, Platanthera stricta, photographed by my wife, who managed to get an Ichneumon wasp in the photo as well. The wap I have not identified further. The photo was taken near Narada Falls on the road from Longmire to Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park, and shows the only orchid we found in park besides a lot of Hooded Ladies'-tresses.

Taken along the Yellowhead Highway between the towns of Blue River and Valemont, this scene is quite typical of the area. There are thousands of bog orchids growing in the ditches and on the banks along the highway, here two species, Platanthera stricta, the Slender Bog Orchis with its green flowers, and Platanthera dilatata, the Tall White Northern Bog Orchis. There are also a few Indian Paintbrush mixed in with the orchids.

This, the Slender Bog Orchis, is another of the native orchids we saw while hiking in the Greenwater area to the north of Mount Rainier. The species is very common in our area, but I took the photo for the sake of the insect that was working the flowers, some sort of fly, and am hoping that it can be identified.
