This is a California Tortoiseshell butterfly photographed at Fishtrap Lake in eastern WAshington.

Photographed on our back porch, these butterflies were coming to feed on the tomatoes that were left on the vines after a frost. It is a California Tortoiseshell if I am not mistaken.

We haven't yet seen a lot of butterflies but this California Tortoiseshell was photographed at Fishtrap Lake when we hiked there recently. The insets are a miscellany from recent hikes.

This is a California Tortoiseshell photographed on the rail of our back porch. After our tomato plants were hit by frost the butterflies came to feed on the juices of frozen fruits. This was one of them.

This was taken in the perennial gardens at Manito City Park in Spokane. Milbert's Tortoiseshell is Nymphalis milberti. On the day this one was photographed they were everywhere.

Near Ancient Lakes my wife spotted this Mourning Cloak butterfly laying eggs on a willow twig (actually, I am not sure it was a willow twig because I was so excited about seeing the butterfly that I never noticed what the plant was).
