This is the view north from Sares Head on Fidalgo Isalnd. The bluffs can be hiked from this point to the northern edge of the park and are noted for their beautiful old Madrone trees.

This is the view north from the Montgomery-Duban Headlands and Sares Head with its bluffs and granite balds. Sares Head is the destination of most hikers in Sharpe Park, though there is much more to see and enjoy. The islands are some of the San Juan Islands, with Allan Island and the Williamson Rocks the nearest. The water is the Strait of San Juan de Fuca and that part of it known as Rosario Strait.

Deception Pass is a waterway between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands in the in the straits of San Juan. It connects Skagit Bay with the straits and was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1792. This photo was taken from the Deception Pass bridge which connects the two islands. The bridge is 177 feet high and was built in in the 1930's. Some of our children and grandchildren visited over the holidays and I was out with our son-in-law on a photoigraphic expedition.

Photographed at Clayton Beach. If I am not mistaken, this is the skeleton of the Eccentric or Pacific Sand Dollar or Biscuit Sea Urchin, Dendraster excentricus. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/08/larrabee-st...

Goose Rock

This is the view looking to the southwest from the top of Goose Rock. This is just under 500 feet above sea level and the land stretching away into the distance is Whidbey Island with the Straits of San Juan de Fuca shown also. The lake in the foreground is Cranberry Lake (also shown below) and in the distance where the coast curves in is the Whidbey Isalnd Naval Air Station. The granite balds, a feature of Goose Rock are clearly seen in the foreground, though there were not a lot of wildflowers blooming on the balds this late in the year. As I write this, I have my coat on, ready to leave to do some exploring around Deception Pass and Goose Rock. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/clayton-bea...

The ultimate destination in Sharpe Park is Sares Head where one has fabulous views of the Straits of San Juan and the San Juan Islands. This photo was taken looking south and shows the granite balds which are quite a common feature of the coast in this area and which support a unique and wonderful flora. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/sharpe-park...
