This past Tuesday, April 28, we hiked once again at Hog Lake, just west of where we live. We photographed there these Shooting Stars, which I've identified at Bonneville Shooting Stars. They varied in color from white to deep pink and the insets show some of the color variation.

We spent a lot of time this week photographing wildflowers at Hog Lake. These Bonneville Shooting Stars come in a variety of color including these white flowers.

I posted the white form of the Few-flowered Shooting Star a few days ago (see inset). This is the ordinary pink form, though a paler example. This, like the other, was photographed in the area of Medical Lake, Washington.

The Few-flowered Shooting Star, Dodecatheon pulchellum, is usually found in its common pink form, but this is the white form, which is rarer. We found these in eastern Washington near Medical Lake, a few white-flowered plants among many others. We were out photographing wildflowers in an open woodland and these were the find of the day - found by my wife who has a sharper eye for such things than I do. We also forgot it was tick season - we found six ticks on ourselves afterward, though none of them had begun to bite.

This is, I believe, Henderson's Shooting Star, Dodecatheon hendersonii, photographed in Washington Park on Fidalgo Island where it blooms profusely near the seaside.

This is the Tall Mountain Shooting Star, Dodecatheon jeffreyi, a rather rare wildflower found in alpine areas. We photographed these near Lake Serene where quite a few wildflowers were still blooming. At lower elevations the Shooting Stars are spring wildflowers, but there is little distinction between spring and summer at higher elevations.

Dodecatheon pulchellum, the Few-Flowered Shooting Star, is one of our native wild-flowers that we travel to see every spring. This plant was photographed in Washington Park near Anacortes, where is grows by the thousands on the edge of the rocks at the sea-side within reach of salty spray and waves. It is quite a sight to see all of them blooming at the same time, and certainly worth the nearly two-hour trip from our home. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/spring-in-w...

Photographed in Washington Park, these grow by the thousands at Greenpoint on the edge of the rocks just above the water, exposed to the elements and waves. They bloom in the spring. The botanical name is Dodecatheon pulchellum. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/05/spring-in-w...

To the best of my knowledge this is the Few-flowered Shooting Star, Dodecatheon pulchellum, another early spring wildflower that is quite common in our area, but always a joy to find. These were photographed in a sheltered area on the north side of the mesa above Dusty Lake. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...

Everything is early here this year. Many of the wildflowers are blooming several weeks ahead of their usual blooming times and these are no exception. These were photographed at Ancient Lakes but I found them blooming in Washington Park near Anacortes earlier this week. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...

Dodecatheon pulchellum is another early spring wildflower that we have found both in eastern and western Washington. Fairly common but always beautiful, these were photographed in Washington Park near Anacortes. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/spring-wild...
