Taken on Memorial Day hike in the Chuckanuts with son Edward. It was not a very nice day and when finally it began to rain hard we gave it up, hiked out and went to the local coffee shop to warm up. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-chuckanuts.html

This is one of those photos in which I am trying to capture something of what our forests are like and what it is like to hike them in them. The photo was taken on a Memorial Day hike with son Edward in the Chuckanut Mountains. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-chuckanuts.html

Taken on the Fragrance Lake trail in Larrabee State Park, this gives an idea of what our northwestern forests are like, green and mossy with ferns everywhere. Many thanks to those who identified the fern for me.

Fragrance Lake

Last week Friday my wife and I had planned to go hiking but woke up to rain. We decided in the end to go anyway and took our ponchos along to help keep us and our camera equipment dry. We hiked up to Fragrance Lake in Larrabee State Park in the Chuckanuts. We did not find any orchids in bloom (did find a few that were not yet blooming), and didn't find many other wildflowers either, and so concentrated on getting some pictures that would show what our Pacific Northwest forests are like on a rainy day. This photo was taken at the lake itself and gives a good idea of what the day was like. My apologies, too, for the delay in commenting. I was out hiking and orchid hunting all day and have a science fair to go to this evening, but will catch everyone up before the day is over. Visited five different places today on Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands and hiked about five miles. That was all I was able to do with a gimpy leg that I hurt playing softball. I found three different orchid species, Fairy Slippers and two different Coralroots in bloom and found a white Fairy Slipper as well. Thanks for your patience and for all the comments and visits. They are very much appreciated. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

Viewpoint with No View

There is a side trail from the trail to Fragrance Lake that takes you to a viewpoint from which the Straits of San Juan and the San Juan Islands can be seen. This was the view the day we hiked to the viewpoint. The tree in front is a Pacific Madrone. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

The trail to Fragrance Lake not only goes up to the lake but around it and on the west side of the lake are these rather impressive cliffs, formed, I believe, of Chuckanut Sandstone. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

The Trail

This was the trail near Fragrance Lake. As we approached the lake the fog came in even more thickly and there was little to be seen of the lake as a result. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

This is one of my wife's photos from our hike up to Fragrance Lake. These trees growing over the boulders are so remarkable, I think everyone stops for a closer look, and we not only looked but took photos. I'm posting her photo, however, because it's better than any of mine. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

Taken along the Fragrance Lake trail in the Chuckanut Mountains on a drizzly misty day. I like the atmosphere of this shot. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

One of my wife's pictures from our hike to this mountain lake in the Chuckanuts. Her picture is better than mine, so I've posted it instead. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...

One more shot from Fragrance Lake taken on the far side of the lake. I may be back there today, but I won't be hiking in fog and mist. The weather has been sunny and warm all week. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-wet-walk-...
