Daughter's House

Before going to France we were in Northern Ireland and in England. In Northern Ireland we stayed with our oldest daughter who is a doctor, a nephrologist, in Belfast. She had to work while we were there and we spent most of our time doing odd jobs around her house, shown here.

This is the Palm House in the Belfast Botanic Gardens. It was closed, as were all the other buildings when I was there. Completed in 1840, it is one of the earliest curvilinear cast iron greenhouses in the world.

Rose with Water Drops

I am posting only one photo today. We'll be leaving shortly to go hiking with six other family members, a daughter, two sons and their wives and a baby granddaughter. We had planned on going backpacking yesterday and staying overnight, but the weather yesterday was cold and rainy and none of us wanted to hike or camp in the rain. Today is supposed to be clear and sunny, though cold, and we intend to hike the Heliotrope Ridge trail near Mount Baker. The rose was photographed in the Belfast Botanic Gardens near Queens University. There was not much blooming when I wandered through the gardens and the buildings were all closed, but it did get some photos of the few roses that were left.

We spent two pleasant weeks quarantining on the coast but the last week of our stay, when we were back in Belfast, our daughter had to work. She dropped me off one morning in the area of Queen's University and spent some time wandering around there and in the nearby botanic gardens. There was not much in bloom and the palm house, tropical ravine and nearby Friar's Bush cemetery were all closed. I did photograph a few roses that were covered with heavvy dew from the night before and then wandered off to the city center.

This and the inset, a photo of the Crown Bar, show two of Belfast's most famous pubs. Bittles Bar is on Victoria Street near the Lagan River. In this photo, the Albert Clock is in the background on the right. We had gone to St. George's Market for breakfast (crepes) and to buy a few things and were wandering around this area of Belfast.

We are at present in Belfast at our daughter's house and will be here until early next week. I've been doing odd jobs for her but spent one morning walking around the city center, though many of the familiar sights were closed. This is Belfast City Hall. Plans for the city hall began in 1888 when Belfast was designated a city by Queen Victoria, whose statue stands in front.

One of our children is a graduate of Queen's and until very recently has lived and worked in Belfast. This building dates to 1849 and was opened four years after the University itself was begun.
