Upper Gaylor Lake

First, my apologies for being so tardy in responding to visits and comments. There have been several things that came up that needed to be dealt with and I am behind with everything as a result. The photo is of Upper Gaylor Lake, taken on a hike in the northern part of Yosemite National Park. The panorama was taken with my phone, something I do only occasionally.

This panorama of the Sierra Nevada was taken near Independence, California. It is one of the few photos of our recent trip to southern California taken with my phone.

Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point is in a state park near Canyonlands National Park. The point is connected by a very narrow neck to the plateau nearby and was once used as a corral for wild horse. The cowboys would drive the horses there, take the best and leave the rest to die, hence the name of the point. We've been there several times, with this photo from a 2022 visit to the park and point.

Another panorama, taken with my phone, of the Vermillion Cliffs. They are part of the Grand Staircase the Colorado Plateau and we saw them as we drove from Cedar City, Utah, to Grand Canyon National Park.

This was taken on our favorite hike of our recent trip, a hike to and through Lost Canyon in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The photo does not do justice to the scene, but we were high up on a ledge having hiked and climbed up out of the canyon in the center of the photo.

Arches National Park

We are home again after two and a half weeks and over 3000 miles (nearly 5000 km) of driving. We visited four national parks, Grand Canyon, Zion, Canyonlands and Arches and two state parks, Coral Pink Sand Dunes and Dead Horse Point. We hiked over 90 miles (145 km) of trails, slept in the back of our van eight nights, in our backpacking tent four nights, out under the stars one night, and in motels four nights. Most of our hiking was day hiking but we did one night of backbacking in Canyonlands. We hiked down into Grand Canyon twice, though not to the bottom. We had intended to camp at the bottom of the canyon but no campsites were available due to a washout at the Cottonwood campground. We hiked the Bright Angel trail to Indian Gardens one day and the South Kaibab trail to Skeleton Point the next day. The first hike involved going down 3000 fee (915 m) into the canyon (and then back up again). The second was a drop of 2000 feet (610 m), all of which had to be made up again. The second week of our trip we camped and hiked with our oldest daughter who flew in from Northern Ireland. We picked her up in Salt Lake City and dropped her off there again on the way home. She was with us in Canyonlands and Arches. When camping she had the back of the van and my wife and I had the tent. When backpacking she had the tent and my wife and I slept under the stars. This had become an annual event for us and for her, but we have not yet decided our next destination. This is Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. It can be seen from several easily reached viewpoints but we hiked about three miles (5 km) on a trail that included some rather precarious spots along narrow ledges to see it. Arches was our favorite place, but that was only because none of us had been there before. The photo was taken with my phone and I've posted it along with another phone photo since I have not had time to download the 2000 photos I took with my camera.

Mount St. Helens

Last summer we spent our family holiday near Packwood, Washington, just south of Mount Rainier National Park. We rented a house there for twenty of us and spent a good part of the time in the park, but did go for a day to Mount St. Helens and to the Johnson Observatory there. This is the view of Helens from the observatory. We are planning another family holiday for this summer, this time, if everyone makes it for thirty of us. We've rented a big house this year near Glacier National Park.

This was taken from our last campsite in Big Bend National Park. We camped that night near the Paint Gap Hills and left the next morning for San Antonio where we spent two days before dropping our daughter off at the airport and starting the long drive home ourselves.

After picking up our oldest daughter in San Antonio we traveled to Big Bend National Park where we hiked and camped for four days. This panorama was taken on one of our hikes. The Lost Mine Trail is a popular hike that offers stunning view of Casa Grande and the Chisos Basin. It is about five miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain.

Dead Horse Point State Park

This was taken with my phone at sunrise in Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. We had been in the Island in the Sky area of Canyonlands National Park the previous day and got up early to catch the sunrise here, just a few miles outside of that part of Canyonlands. We went on from here, after having our breakfast, to the Needles district of Canyonlands.

This was one of our first stops in Canyonlands National Park, Island in the Sky District, when we were there recently. We had driven through the night and spent the rest of day in this part of Canyonlands before finding a campsite outside the park for the night.

Electric Pass

This is where I've been the last while. The photo looks north from Electric Pass in the Colorado Rockies near Aspen. My 14 year old grandson and I drove to Colorado last week, met one of my brothers and one of his grandsons, 11 years old. We camped over the weekend in Carbondale, Colorado and then spent three days backpacking to Cathedral Lake at 11866 feet (3617 m). We day-hiked from there to Electric Pass at 13,600 feet (4145 m). We had three good days of hiking and one very wet night. It was the first time backpacking or hiking in the mountains for the two grandsons and they both enjoyed it and did very well.

Zabriskie Point is one of the viewpoints in the Amargosa Mountains on the east side of Death Valley National Park. We spent several days in Death Valley recently after having to change plans due to snow and winter weather in Grand Canyon National Park. We also hiked in this area.

I thought I would post one more sunset photo, this one a panorama taken with my phone. I don't do many phone photos but an occasional panorama is in order.
