Opened in 1912 and designed by the well-known architect, Frederick Olmstead, Northern State Mental Hospital was originally a self-sufficient institution with a farm and cannery to support its operations. The hospital is in the shadow of the Cascades and was a very beautiful place. The hospital was closed in 1973 but many of the main buildings are still used for other purposes. The farm, however, has fallen into decay and is now part of a state recreation area and open to the public. We visited there last October and walked the area of the old farm. These are some of the barns that were part of the hospital's dairy.

This is up on the Columbia Plateau somewhere in Douglas County if I remember., and a typical eastern Washington scene with the abandoned farm buildings and the endless wheat fields. We often travel the back roads looking for scenes like this and stopping to photograph them when we do find something memorable.

Taken late in the day, this is a rather typical eastern Washington farm. I had several other shots but like this one the best since it had the flock of blackbirds in the foreground. The picture was taken west of Spokane near the town of Medical Lake.

The eagles are in the area nesting and fishing, and while out today I managed to get a few half decent shots. I didn't have my telephoto lens so they are a bit more distant than I would have liked. The second shot, however, is with a cheap telephoto and was taken a few days previous to the others. Taken on the west side of the town of Lynden, Washington, a small farming community that carries on its business in shadow of Mount Baker and the North Cascades. We live a little further east within the town limits.

Taken on a trip to the Scottish Highlands in 1993. This is a scan from an old slide and was photographed with a Minolta SRT201 on Kodachrome 64 film.

Typical drier, sparsely populated farmland of the east-central part of the state of Washington - very different from the rainy, forested and mountainous western part of the state.

As noted with the previous picture, some of the old administration and hospital buildings on the grounds of Northern State Hospital have been put to other uses. The farm has been allowed to fall into ruin as is evident from this photo of one of the old farm buildings. This is one of the farm's outbuildings at Northern State Hospital. It appears to have been used as a shelter for cattle or for hay and falling down and overrun with brambles. This photo also gives a sense of how large this area is. This old boiler (there are several of them) was in one of the old dairy buildings at Northern State Hospital. These are some of the only pieces of equipment still remaining on the site, almost everything else having been removed or stolen. I believe that these were coal fired and that there was a railroad spur to the hospital that brought in the coal and other necessities. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/01/northern-st...
