Salmonberry Blossom

Twice in recent weeks we've been to Wallace Falls State Park in the North Cascades. The park is on the west side of the mountains, near the town of Goldbar, off State Highway 2. The park is noted for its spectacular waterfalls, a series of nine falls and cascades, the tallest of which is 265 feet. When we hiked there little was blooming except the Salmonberry bushes, and this is one of the flowers. Later in the year there will be large orange-red fruits that look like raspberries and taste like an insipid version of that fruit. They were often gathered by the Indians and used by them to make pemmican, a mixture of meat and fruit pounded together, in this case, the meat of salmon and these berries. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/04/wallace-fal...

This is a complex hybrid involving four different genera, Diacrium, Laelia, Brassavola and Cattleya (some of these have now been renamed). The parents are Dialaelia Snowflake and Brassolaeliocattleya Orange Nugget. It was photographed at the Northwest Orchid Society show last spring. orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2012/12/northwest-orchid-...
