Reflections
13 May 2009 |
|
In a neighbor's yard there are a number of old concrete stepping stones decorated with glass discs. The stones are overgrown with moss and lead nowhere. Most of them are buried in litter from the trees, but in a few places the glass still reflects the light and catches the attention of passers-by. In photographing these I did not even realize that I had gotten the reflection of the trees arching overhead until I uploaded them to my computer and examined them more closely.

Pieces of blown glass back lit in the Seattle Glassblowing Studio. The colors and textures of the various pieces were spectacular and the prices far beyond my reach, but with the permission of the proprietors we spent a good deal of time there taking pictures.

These are the outdoor gardens at the Chihuly exhibition in Seattle, where fanciful glass forms are "planted" alongside living trees and flowers.

Chihuly Garden and Glass

These are two of four very large glass sculptures in the ourdoor garden of the Chihuly exhibition in Seattle. I'll post one more outdoor shot tomorrow and then some indoor shots and then I'll cease boring everyone with these pictures.

I believe this part of the outdoor exhibit at Chihuly Garden and Glass is correctly named (there are no names posted outdoors). It has an alien feel to me and reminds me of the science fiction stories I used to read.

Persian Ceiling Room

Now some pictures of the indoor part of the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition in Seattle. This is the Persian Ceiling Room, a room with a lighted ceiling filled with different glass shapes and objects. I heard more than one person gasp as they walked around the corner into this room. This was the fourth room of the indoor exhibition, between the Sealife Room and the Mille Fiori Room. It was also one of the brightest and easiest to photograph.

"Thousand Flowers" is one of the largest indoor exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass. It has a room all to itself and is assembled on a 20 x 58 foot mirrored oval. This is the view one sees when entering the room. It is supposed to be modeled after his mother's garden.

This room at the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition included a set of his well-known bowls on stands. The information given with the exhibit indicated that these bowls are made of three layers of glass with a lip wrap of a contrasting color. This was the darkest of the rooms and the most difficult to photograph, also because we had to wait for people to move out of the way.

Another photo from the Chihuly Garden and Glass Exhibition. This is another full size exhibit with a room to itself, that includes two boats. Shown here is the Float Boat. The Ikebana Boat is just to the right of it. Very impressive displays and fun to photograph.

Chandeliers

This room at the Chihuly Exhibition in Seattle had as its centerpiece a huge standing sculpture of clear glass, with a smaller chandelier of the same form and color hanging above it and four very large chandeliers of different forms and colors in the four corners of the room. This photo shows the centerpiece and one of the chandeliers.
