Mount Adams is one of the many active stratovolcanos in the Cascades that form a chain reaching from British Columbia to California. It is the second highest mountain in the state of Washington after Mount Rainier but much more remote. This photo was taken from a turnoff along Highway 97 south of Goldendale and Brooks Memorial State Park and just before descending into the Columbia River Gorge.
On our recent trip through Washington, Oregon and California we spent our first night in Blewett Pass south of Leavenworth, Washington, and spent some time in that area the next morning before traveling south through Yakima to the Columbia River Gorge. Before reaching the gorge we spent some time in Brooks Memorial State Park where we hunted for orchids and other wildflowers and did some hiking.

Taken from the Park Butte trail, this is Glacier Peak, at 10,425 feet the fourth highest peak in Washington. and one of five major stratovolcanoes in the state. It is also one of the most remote peaks in the state. Historically it has produced some of the largest and most explosive eruptions of any of the Cascade volcanoes.

Another shot from Mount St. Helens and the Johnson Ridge Observatory showing the base of the volcano in the background and the upper end of the Toutle River Valley which received most of the mud and ash flow, visible in the picture and carved by the streams that become the Toutle River. The picture below, taken in 2009, is from the other side of the volcano, at Windy Ridge, and shows one end of Spirit Lake and the collapsed cone of the volcano, with the main blast area below.

We had a grandson staying with us for five weeks this summer and took him and a friend to Mount St. Helens. Sadly the day was overcast and we were not able to see the volcano itself, but they did watch the video of the eruption at the Johnson Observatory and saw the area around the volcano including the Toutle River valley were the main mud flows went. This was taken from one of the viewpoints above the valley as we traveled up Johnson Ridge.
