The first evening we were in Bayeux (from our guest house in Le Molay-Littry) we watched the light and music show at Bayeux Cathedral. We did not know about the show, but were passing the cathedral on our way to our vehicle when it was starting and stayed to see it all.

After wandering around Bayeux and finding a place for our evening meal, we headed for our car, only to find a light show starting at the cathedral.

This is one of the rain spouts at Bayeux Cathedral, a rather interesting way of draining the cathedral's roof.
Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is displayed in a museum in the city of Bayeux. It dates to the 11th Century so it is almost 1000 years old, an amazing survival. It is nearly 70 metres long (230 feet) and 50 cm tall (20 inches). It tells the story of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066 following the death of Edward the Confessor and the crowning of Harold Godwinson as King of England. Harold's right to the throne was challenged by William who invaded England and defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings. This scene from the tapestry shows the death of Harold, who was probably killed by an arrow through the eye. The caption reads, "Harold the King is dead."

When in Bayeux, we visited the museum where the Bayeux Tapestry is displayed. In the museum there are also many other exhibits including dioramas of various scenes from the tapestry. This diorama shows the death of Edward the Confessor, King of England, in 1066. His death precipitated the events that lead to William of Normandy's invasion and conquest of England and victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

This old water wheel on the River Aure is one of the must-see sights in Bayeux. We saw it in the evening when we were there but would have liked to have gone back and photographed it in better light.

We visited Bayeux twice for meals and sight-seeing. Most of our time was spent in the area of the cathedral and the evening when this photo was taken we saw a light show at the cathedral. The cathedral was dedicated in 1077 though parts of it were rebuilt in the 12th century and parts were not finished until the 19th century.

After a day of traveling down from Le Tilleul and visiting the D-Day beaches we checked into our new guest house in Le Molay-Littry and went on to Bayeux. We went first to the cathedral but it was closed and so walked along the River Aure and then went for our evening meal. After a relaxed and wonderful meal we went back to the cathedral and watched the evening light show there before returning to our guest house.
