Related to Indian Paintbrush and also known as Red Kittentails or Red Coraldrops, We photographed this spring wildflower at Hog Lake in eastern Washington. We had gone to Hog Lake to hike and see the spring wildflowers and were not disappointed as this and the insets show.

This is the red-stemmed form of the Spotted Coralroot, Corallorhiza maculata var. maculata fma. rubra. It was photographed on an orchid-hunting excursion to eastern Washington some weeks ago. It was only when I was getting the photo ready to post that I noticed the caterpillar on one of the flower stems. Do you see it?

Friday, June 27, I hiked the Goat Lake trail with my brother, Tim, who was in the area on business. The day was very wet and we hiked in the rain for a good part of the 10-11 miles we did. Part of the hike was through magnificent forests of Red Alder, seen here with the trail just visible in the foreground, but we also hiked though some amazing old growth forest with huge Western Hemlocks, Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars. The hike was very worthwhile in spite of the rain and one we need to do again in better weather. Goat Lake is in the North Cascades in the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness.
