Contrasts

These children would probably draw no attention by themselves, but together the contrast between the black hair of the Singaporean twins and white hair of the American child drew many stares and comments.

Masdevallia strobelii crossed with Masdevallia veitchiana. The basic flower color is yellow and the orange or red tones are the result of reddish hairs or glands growing all across the surface of the flower. Both parents have these "hairs" and so they are very prominent in this hybrid as well.

Hypnotic

21 Jun 2009 1 319
"It was spattered with hundreds and hundreds of burgundy flecks. The flecks were slightly ovoid, and they were clustered in curving rows so that they looked as if they had been painted on as the flower spun around. Staring at the pattern of the flecks was dizzying. Staring at it for a long time was hypnotizing." Susan Orlean, The Orchid Thief In Explore June 20, 2009, #438.

"Those blood drops from the burning heart of June…

"Orange bright, like golden lamps in a green light…

Unidentified Alpine Sedge

I believe this to be correctly identified as a sedge, but which one I do not know. Perhaps someone who sees the picture can tell me, but I understand that the sedges are exceedingly difficult to distinguish. This was photographed on the tundra along the trail to Snowbird Pass in Mount Robson Provincial Park, but was also seen at lower elevations (alpine and sub-alpine).
