Photographed on Fidalgo Island near Deception Pass. Last spring we hiked a trail, new to us, from Rosario Beach to Bowman Beach, looking for Fairy Slippers and other wildflwoers, all of which we found in abundance. This is the Harsh Paintbrush, Castilleja hispida.

I believe this is Harsh Paintbrush, Castilleja hispida, but I find the Indian Paintbrushes very difficult to tell apart. These were photographed on Manastash Ridge south of Ellensburg, Washington, on the Ray Westberg trail. Manastash and Umtanum Ridges, which lie between the Kittitas Valley and Yakima, are a wildflower paradise in the spring. The imbedded photos show some of the views from the ridge and some of the wildflower meadows.

I have a great deal of difficult figuring out which species the Paintbrushes are and thought this was the Slender Paintbrush, Castilleja miniata. It also was photographed along Chiwaukum Creek earlier this year. This has been identified correctly as Castilleja hispida var. hispida, the Harsh Paintbrush, by Mark Egger. Thanks! ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/chiwaukum-c...

I am not sure I have the ID correct on this, but trust that Mark will correct me if I am wrong. This was photographed at Goose Rock near Deception Pass. Goose Rock, on the south side of the pass, supports a unique flora and is noted for its granite balds. It is also a wonderful place for views of the San Juan Strait and Islands and of the north end of Whidbey Island. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/whidbey-isl...
