This was where we began our hike to Balanced Rock in Big Bend National Park the afternoon we arrived in the park.

In southwestern Oregon and northwestern California lie the Siskyou Mountains, a sub-range of the Klamath Mountains whose underlying rock is largely serpentine, a green and black rock full of heavy metals. In these serpentine areas a unique flora can be found including several orchids and the carnivorous plant known as a Cobra Lily. While still in California we explored some of these areas in the Siskyous and I took this photo of an outcrop along a forest service road.

This is the first in a number of photos of Mount Rushmore I'll be posting in the next few days.

The second in a series of pictures of Mount Rushmore, this shot was taken at night when the faces are lighted as part of a presentation on the history of the carvings. Taken with a Minolta SR-T 201.

This third shot of Mount Rushmore is a reflection in a window of the visitors' center there.

I am not sure I have the ID correct on this, but trust that Mark will correct me if I am wrong. This was photographed at Goose Rock near Deception Pass. Goose Rock, on the south side of the pass, supports a unique flora and is noted for its granite balds. I've posted several pictures of this tree recently.. Here's another taken Tuesday from the top of Goose Rock. The tree gets much larger than this and this tree, still young, is just starting to develop the peeling back that is characteristic of the species. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/02/pass-island...
