This orchid species is from Papua New Guinea and belongs to the Oxyglossum group of Dendrobiums. The species varies greatly in size, with this plant 8-10 inches tall and another plant we own only about 2 inches tall. These flower opened a bright pink and gradually faded to the more muted shades shown here. In Explore March 15, 2012, #411. Dendrobium violaceum is a variable species from the highlands of New Guinea. The plant varies from 8 to 40 cm in height, the flowers from 3 to 4.5 cm. The flowers also vary in color from pink to purple and even come in blue and white. This plant is around 30 cm tall and the flowers about 4 cm. The plant has narrow pseudobulbs, visible in the picture, and narrow channeled leaves. The flowers last about six months, though the color fades a bit as they grow older.
