I don't even remember exactly where this was taken along the North Cascades Highway, but it is typical of the scenery along much of the way, small mountain streams, rugged peaks, alpine lakes and in the autumn the beautiful yellows and oranges of the alders and other small trees mixed with the green of the firs, pines and hemlocks. When I see these pictures again my heart aches for the mountains and their beauty.

This is the sign for the National Park as one travels east through the park. The snow on the sign is not real.

The town of Newhalem is within North Cascades National Park, but is a town that is mostly residences for those who are involved in running the power plant there. The town is owned by Seattle City Light and the residents are all employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, or other county, state or federal agencies. The photo was taken when driving through the National Park and along the North Cascades Highway to do some hiking at Blue Lake.

This is an unnamed falls along the North Cascades Highway in North Cascades National Park. The picture was taken at one of the many turnouts along the road as we drove through the park on our way to eastern Washington.

This is one of my wife's photos, taken where Thunder Creek empties into Diablo Lake and below the viewpoint from which the previous shot was taken. There is a highway bridge here and the road drops down to the bridge before winding up again along the hillside on the right to the Diablo Lake overlook. From there the road climbs to Rainy Pass and Washington Pass.

Pyramid Peak is one of the peaks that overlooks Diablo Lake, the lake formed by Diablo Dam in the North Cascades. The photo was taken on a recent trip through the North Cascades on Highway 20 and from the Diablo Lake overlook.

This photo was taken from the same place as the previous photo, the Diablo Lake overlook on Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway, and in the area of North Cascades National Park. The lake is Diablo Lake formed by the Diablo Dam, one of the dams that provide hydroelectric power for the city of Seattle and the peak in the background is Colonial Peak. The photo was taken in summer rather than autumn.

This is another photo from our drive through North Cascades National Park to the Maple and Heather Pass trailhead where we hiked on Friday, October 24th. The peak on the far right is Pyramid Peak and the peak in the center is Colonial Peak. The lake is Diablo Lake formed by the Diablo Dam. The photo was taken from the Diablo Lake overlook, a necessary stop on the North Cascades Highway.

This was taken along Washington's Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway, in North Cascades National Park. The waterfall, as far as I know, is unnamed. The photo was taken in the morning as we traveled through the park to the trailhead for Maple and Heather Passes. It was handheld. Ordinarily I would use a tripod to photograph moving water but was in a hurry that morning to get hiking.

In Explore March 18, 2009, #486. Easy Pass is on the east side of North Cascades National Park and must have been named by someone as joke, since it is anything but easy. My son and I hiked this overnight stayg in Fisher Basin.
