Photographed near Hog Lake, this one of the many Lomatiums, Desert Parsleys, that are blooming now. We saw five or six different specie when out hiking this past week.

The theme for today is "Lomatiums." Known as Desert Parsley, they are common wildflowers in our area. Interestingly, a potion made from their roots is supposed to increase one's resistance to viruses, but we have not experimented. These Gray's Desert Parsley were photographed at Escure Ranch in eastern Washington. Most of the Lomatiums have umbels of yellow flowers like this species but there are several with white flowers and one with chocolate flowers. One of white-flowered species is shown in the insets.

This is the Nine-leaf Lomatium, a common spring wildflower in eastern Washington. The Lomatiums are also known as Desert Parsley and these Desert Parsley were photographed near Fishtrap Lake in the scablands of Washington.

This Lomatium or Desert Parsley was one of the wildflowers we photographed on our last hike at Fishtrap Lake in eastern Washington. Unlike other of the Lomatiums many of which have ferny foliage, this has grassy foliage.

I am interrupting my series of photos of Big Bend National Park to post some hiking photos. The last two weeks we have made a point of getting out for a day to do some hiking and have found a few spots even though most parks are closed. We are under a stay at home order on account of the corona virus and have managed to find plenty to do, but feel the need to get out. Last week we went to Escure Ranch a former Basque sheep ranch in the channeled scablands of eastern Washington and hiked along Rock Creek to Towell Falls. We saw only four other people so we were able to maintain "social distancing" easily. This was not the main falls - we could not get to them because of high water in the side channel which had these falls. The wildflowers are a Lomatium or Desert Parsley, probably Lomatium multifidum. There were few wildflowers in bloom but these were abundant near the falls. It is interesting that the roots of this plant and other related plants are reputed to increase resistance to viruses. We did not sample it, however, in hope that it would help us avoid the corona virus. We had beautiful weather, though a cold front and rain were moving in by the end of the day. It was windy and chilly but the sunshine was most welcome. We hiked about six miles and had a cup of coffee to warm us when we arrived back at the car, using our backpacking burner and some Starbucks instant coffee and then went on home for our evening meal.

This is one of the first wildflowers to start growing in the spring, though it blooms later, and is an important forage plant for deer and elk. It grows to a meter high and produces these large umbels of bright yellow flowers. Some of the fern-like foliage from which it gets its name is visible in the second inset.

Spring Gold is one of the earliest wildflowers to bloom in western Washington. These were photographed on Pass Island in Deception Pass the first week in March. We had gone wildflower hunting there while on the west side of the Cascades.

Lomatium dissectum, the Fern-leaf Lomatium, also known as Chocolate tips is unusual in its family. Most of the plants in the family have yellow or white flowers. This is also quite a large plant and an early spring bloomer. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/reecer-cree...
