This is a Pygmy Nuthatch, the smallest bird we have coming to our feeders, but a very active little bird that flits back and forth between the feeders and the trees and when at the feeders throws seed every which way.

This Pygmy Nuthatch is at a feeder that hangs just outside our kitchen window and he is watching me as I take his photo. They come to the feeders, throw seeds around until they find one to their liking, grab it and fly away to eat it.

These little birds are very active at our feeders, often throwing out numerous seeds before finding one they like and then flying away with it.

We have two kinds of Nuthatches coming to our feeders, this and the Red-breasted (see inset) and this the smaller of the two, as its name suggests. It is about 4 inches (10 cm) in length.

These tiny birds are regular visitors at our feeders, especially the suet feeders, along with the Pygmy Nuthatch. Their range is more extensive than the Pygmy Nuthatch, however, and covers almost all of North America except the farthest north.
