My mother in her prom dress, 1942

After she bought the dress from the Montgomery-Ward catalog, quite an expense for her parents, the Senior Prom was cancelled because of strict WWII gas rationing. This was in a tiny berg called Interior, South Dakota. Before moving into town for a couple of years, the family lived on a cattle ranch about 10 miles away. Mom grew up on the ranch and daydreamed about moving to a big city. This is truly in the middle of nowhere. AA274 Special times/customs

My Great-Grandparents at their farm gate

Rose Anna and Jacob Woods, doing a little dance, sometime in the 1930s. She was a Randolph of Scottish origin. He was a descendant of German immigrants originally named Busch, which was Angicized to Woods. Jacob Woods was the headmaster at the Indian school in Wanblee, S. Dakota, for many years. He died before I was born. Grandma died when I was five years old and I have a few vague memories of her.
