Big mouth guy, Bocca della Verità

The Bocca della Verità is a pagan superstition. He separates the honest from the dishonest. If you put your hand in his mouth and you are a liar, he will bite it off. I decided not try him. There were two other representations of this character in the Vatican Museum, but this one is right at the entrance to St. Peter's. I guess the Pope doesn't want any liars inside!

Scenes from the Life of St Francis of Asissi

Bardi Chapels, Santa Croce. One of the major reasons I wanted to visit Florence was to see the frescoes of Giotto. There were several problems with photographing these: I was new to my camera (and photography, for that matter), flash is not allowed, you are required to stay a certain distance away, and the condition of the frescoes is poor. These are my excuses, anyway! www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/g/giotto/s_croce/index.html

Lantern of the Duomo

The lantern is the adornment structure, usually octagonal, atop a cathedral dome. This element was also designed by Brunelleschi after a lengthy design competition. He was forced to "audition" for this portion of the dome due to running afoul of the wardens of the cathedral with his hot temper. It was completed in 1471.
