This gorge was cut by water during a series of jükullaups during the end of the last ice age. A large lake formed when the remains of the Scandinavian ice cap retreated east for the main water divide between west and east Norway. It spanned several valley systems. On several occasions the water found a way through the glacier in one of the valley systems. When the water emptied in one valley, it overflowed from the other, digging this gorge located at the lowest point between the valleys. This is the western end, looking east with the water flow. Google earth view of this site, notice the bright horizontal beach mark on the hillsides in front: www.google.no/maps/@61.9387339,11.3723425,10187a,20y,285.41h,63.88t/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en
The ice was to the left, outside the view, jutulhogget in the center. From the air: www.flommer.no/glomma/side.cfm?ID_art=78
