Bis zu der Errichtung des Hochablass-Wasserwerkes wurde zwischen den Quellbächen aus dem Stadtwald, die das Trinkwasser lieferten, und den Lechkanälen, die den Aufgaben der Energiegewinnung und Abwasserbeseitigung dienten, strikt getrennt. Die Kanalsysteme des Lechs und der Wertach verlaufen parallel zueinander und münden, kurz bevor sich die beiden Flüsse in der Wolfzahnau vereinen, in den jeweiligen Fluss zurück.
